4:30 pm
the oscars are coming! >> yes, they are. the final preparations are underway at the dolby theater in los angeles ahead of the academy awards sunday night. let's take a live look. there it is. >> it is live! >> it's live right now! you can see the red carpet.
4:31 pm
>> abc7, by the way, the only place where you can watch the 92nd oscars on sunday. quite a number of bay area nominees, in fact. >> hig, >> still sparkling! >> reporter: i don't plan on dilling any time soon. this is my third year. usually there are these huge risers that hold hundreds of guests. this time there are only these two little sections. we'll see how this all works out. you see the amount of prem rourke and the number of bay area nominees. i sat down with two of them involved in the latest star wars movie. the latest installment of the
4:32 pm
"star wars" franchise. it has all the makings of a blockbuster. from its desert adventure scenes to the fierce battles fought on water. roger is one of four men involved in bringing director j. aeb rams' vision to life. it is up for effects. >> the great thing about the nomination, you've been voted in by your peers. so that's a great honor. and it just means the work is recognized. so that really means a tremendous amount. not just myself but the crew. >> reporter: a crew of nearly 2,000 artists from around the globe. over the course of several years was tasked with making the film the most realistic and true to the original "star wars" as possible. >> they went somewhere new. they went to a location.
4:33 pm
so we documented that philosophy on this movie. >> reporter: working alongside industrial light and magic in the presidio, the verb you'll effects company founded by george lucas in 1975. he explained how iisthn modern technology allowed the team to make movie magic. and pay dribble you'd to the >> we used a shot of her from the return of the jedi. we take that face and bring that into our new scene and color correct and it make it max and reynoldary new helmet around her head. >> it looks so real. >> thanks. >> reporter: whether or not this tremendous endeavour will be enough to take hope a golden statue on sunday, we'll have to wait and see. may the academy be with you.
4:34 pm
>> reporter: unbelievable special effects. best of luck to th.soth tt'stl . these huge digital billboards featuring all the oscar nominated films. also, this giant stand which is perfect for those instagram worthy moments. as soon as this leave shot is over, thank you for my camera. i'll be posting some pictures so make sure to follow me. live along the red carpet, i'm dion lem. >> you know it is all about the gram. >> obs. >> thanks for coming in. i have the winners right here, by the way. >> we still need ceremony of the. >> we do. i'm torn as to whether i should reveal them right now. these are my winners, by the way. i have no pull. would you be shocked if 1917 did
4:35 pm
not win best picture? >> i wouldn't be shocked. i would be saddened because i think it is the best film of the year. as cinematic experience, it is the quint essential essence of what flips are. and not to detract from its technical and artistic merit, best supporting rat sense ben in the 1970s. >> so once upon a time in hollywood, there is a real split on this movie. i thought it was long and meandering. yet had some tremendous individual scenes that might all be worthy of an award. what is your take? >> i agree. but it does ramble a bit but this is quentin tarantino. he will ramble a bit. i think he was trying to give as much a feel for that time in
4:36 pm
hollywood as did he with the original story. i thought leonardo dicaprio was amazing. to go with joaquin phoenix. >> the joker. >> oh, yeah. >> rene zellweger will win. >> well -- >> if she doesn't, okay, tell me. we had this conversation before. >> what is interesting is that last year glen close was slam-dunk. it was olivia coleman. so i would be shocked if judy doesn't win but there is something about the oscar voters who are like, we'll make up our own mindbout this. if it isn't her, it might be, from little women, who gives a great performance. and it is note worthy that she is only 25 and this is her fourth oscar nomination. >> amazing. >> what surprises or upsets do you think will occur? i'm giving brad pitt best
4:37 pm
supporting actor. >> they have been sweeping the awards. it wouldn't surprise me if joe pesce got it. he is very good in this and usually he is the high-strung, over the top performance. here he was more measured and the best performance of his entire career. laura dern was very good. but my pick is actually the composite character -- >> i think she was very good. >> oh, yeah. she's been giving great performances for years. there is that scene with roger ales. you see her soul died. >> my soul died, too. we can do this all afternoon but we're out of time. so plug your website real quick. >> killer movie reviews.com. and i'm on the public radio
4:38 pm
exchange. thank you for having me. >> do not forget, you can watch the 92nd oscars on sunday. can my side be firm? and my side super soft? yes. with the sleep number 360 smart bed, on sale now, you can both adjust your comfort with your sleep number setting. can it help me fall asleep faster? yes, by gently warming your feet. but can it help keep me asleep? absolutely, it intelligently senses your movements and automatically adjusts to keep you both comfortable. so, you can really promise better sleep? not promise. prove. and now, during the ultimate sleep number event, save 50% on the sleep number 360 limited edition smart bed. plus 0% interest for 24 months on all smart beds. only for a limited time.

4:42 pm
automatically. apparently the they received an earful about auto play. today they tweeted, we've heard the feedback loud and clear. comcast may soon be getting complaints as well. they recently started their own auto play. i love the auto play. >> the thing that drives me nuts, if i want to watch a few in a row, i have to go backwards and redo the whole process. i think that's the best feature of all. do you understand this? >> i guess a lot of people are node by it. >> i wonder though, they're just hearing about it because it is that way. when they change it, will they hear from us? >> auto play commercials on the web. you can get rid of those. please do. >> okay. next one. it's me. if you do the math -- >> what?
4:43 pm
>> okay. this is according to this which uses measurements of the face on measure perfection. pattinson came in number one followed by henry cavill. bella beat out bee yobs, alber, arianna grande and taylor swift. the numbers say robert pattinson and bella hadid are the most beautiful people walking the earth. >> i disagree. george clooney for the guy. nothing against that guy. >> whoever he is. >> i think for the female, she's gorgeous. >> she is. >> they're all very good looking. >> how do we call anybody the most beautiful person? >> beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
4:44 pm
what about -- well, we'll only get into trouble. [ laughter ] >> beyonce -- >> she's gorgeous. in all almosts. >> i think it depends on your preference. how can you call one person the most beautiful? >> well, spencer caulls himself -- [ laughter ] anyway. i'm sorry. >> it seems like a dating practice that has been around a long time is becoming more common place, at least according to the editor of a website called pure wow. it is called stashing. a fairly recent term for when you're dating someone for a while but they refuse to introduce you to their friends and family. is that bad? is that the sign? experts say there are several reasons why some might do this. maybe they don't get i know what their family or they donal see a future in this relationship. >> read between lines. >> it is time to ghost he this
4:45 pm
person. maybe they're just a jerk. do you have friends that do this? >> i have to say not to defend the stashers, but may be they're thinking, my family will embarrass me if i introduce this person. >> it's not you. it's them. >> it's them. >> right? >> well, you don't want to go too early. if there is friction, you want to kind of let it sill simmer f while. okay. e'rwe simmering. e'rwe simmering. up next, this is the denny's super slam. e'rwe simmering. up next, two bacon, two sausage, two eggs hash browns and pancakes and now make those pancakes all you can eat for a buck. that's where the duper comes in. the all new super duper slam just seven ninety nine. see you at denny's. mik'mike will get it done?'n, ok, let me tell you what the 'it' is.
